It is easy to find a cosy restaurant both in the old part of Visby and in the countryside. Most restaurateurs focus on modern cooking influenced by Gotland and its local ingredients. Furthermore the special Gotlandic atmosphere adds something extra: the old thick walls of a medieval merchant house, the ruins of churches and monasteries in an exciting contrast to modern architecture with new built restaurants close to the sea.
Local specialties
When you visit Gotland you should try some of the local specialties: all kind of lamb dishes with different herbs, smoked flatfish, asparagus and saffron pancake to mention a few. And why not try some truffle? The first Swedish truffle was actually found 1997 in Gotland. Many restaurants have truffle on their menues, especially during the autumn.
Coffee and cakes
Coffee drinking is an important part of life for Swedish people. And maybe that is why you can find such a great variety of different cafés on the island. Many of them bake their own pies, bread, cakes and muffins. You can enjoy sandwiches made from traditionally stone-oven baked loaf.
Small grocery shops
If you prefer to cook your own meal, do not miss to stop at one of the many small grocery shops often situated directly at a farm. Look for a sign that says "Gårdsbutik".
